6 Spots to Take Flower Themed Family Photos in San Diego

Finding the right spot to take family photos in San Diego can be daunting - do you opt for the beach at sunset, a cozy forest, a lush garden, or a well-known local spot? The possibilities are endless, and what a problem to have! If you’re looking for a unique and playful background, consider posing in front of a floral mural. Our beautiful city is full of incredible public art, so we rounded up a handful of our favorites, and you know there had to be flowers involved!!

Native Poppy South Park exterior mural and floral install

First up is our beloved Native Poppy shop in South Park! If you haven’t spent time in South Park, that in itself is a great place to take family photos in San Diego. With its tree-lined streets and robust foodie scene, choosing to take your pics in South Park could turn into a fun afternoon exploring one of San Diego’s quaintest neighborhoods. At the end of that charming street, behind the clock tower, is Native Poppy.

Native Poppy's California poppy mural

This location is a two-for-one for floral photo backgrounds with both our signature California poppy mural, hand-painted by Rebecca Eichten, and a sweeping silk floral installation, designed by our own talented team!

It’s probably not a surprise to hear that next on our list is our Native Poppy shop in Solana Beach, located in the chic Cedros design district. Located only blocks from the beach, this street is flush with home design stores and three independent coffee shops. Nestled next to West Elm on the east side of Cedros Avenue is our beautiful Solana Beach store. With over twice the square footage of our South Park shop, this location is a great place to take family photos in San Diego – not just outside, but inside too. Pick a spot in front of our signature stem bar, or under our walk through floral silk installation!

Artalexia mural

Next is the vibrant mural at Artelexia in North Park. This mural has made its way onto countless lists for places to see in San Diego, and we can see why! With its bright colors and positive, uplifting message, this hand-painted design was brought to life by Channin Fulton and community volunteers. In addition to its beautiful symbolism, we’re including this mural on our list of places to take family photos in San Diego because of the magical smattering of flowers floating above the altar.

Rose garden in San Diego

If you’re looking to trade silk and paint for fresh blooms still growing in the ground, your very own English garden is waiting for you as an option for taking family photos in San Diego! The Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden in Balboa Park is a stunning floral backdrop for your family photos. The garden is in bloom from March through December, with peak season happening in April and May. In contrast to the mostly bright and colorful options suggested here, this location offers a more muted and organic setting. The wide range of colors and varieties also allows you to pose in front of a favorite color or bloom.

Rose cafe portrait in front of floral wall

The Pink Rose Cafe in La Mesa is for all the romantics out there! This ultra feminine spot is lush with silk roses in shades of pink and red, and a super fun spot to take family photos in San Diego – especially for a newly engaged couple or an anniversary shoot. We shot our Valentine’s Day campaign there in 2023 because it was the perfect spot for the season of love. Bonus points: the drinks and treats are delicious!

Mural at Dave's Flower Box

For a sprawling stretch of life-like (and larger-than-life) painted flowers, look no further than the “Flowers Blooming” mural by Hanna Daly. Urban Coast Properties commissioned this stunning piece to beautify the side of their building, widely visible when heading east on El Cajon Blvd. in North Park. The artist worked with Jim from the iconic Dave’s Flower Box to select which flowers to use and develop the concept. The dark background, photo-realistic depiction, and fact that each bloom looms over 10’ tall, makes this mural feel like a modern and moody Alice in Wonderland!
