Celebrating Pride at Native Poppy
LGBTQ+ Pride Month is celebrated around the United States in June, but San Diego keeps the momentum going a bit longer: Pride festivities are typically held in July in our city. This staggered timing gives us a few extra weeks of celebrations and fundraising for our community partners – this year we’re raising money for San Diego Pride, a nonprofit which fosters pride, equality, and respect for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities locally, nationally, and globally.
We’d love to share some of the ways we are honoring our LGBTQ+ community, during Pride month, and beyond:
• Our annual Pride flower designs raise money for charity and advocacy groups that support the LGBTQ+ community. This year we’ve partnered with San Diego Pride, in support of their mission to ensure that LGBTQIA+ people are treated with equality and respect through policy, legislation, and civic engagement.
• Native Poppy’s wedding offerings were designed with diversity in mind. We’re proud to create epic wedding florals for all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, or religion. We added a decal on our front door to signal that our shops are welcoming, inclusive spaces: “We support your love – this business is proudly LGBTQ+ friendly, feminist, and anti-racist.”
• We stock gifts from LGBTQ+ owned-businesses on our shelves year-round, and highlight their designs throughout the Pride season.
• In 2024 we were proud to participate in the San Diego Pride Parade, highlighting our appreciation and respect for our LGBTQ+ teammates, our commitment to equality, and our excitement for flowering for the community. We had a blast hosting a pride party at Barrel & Board, with music, floral DIYs, and activations with several local artists — all while raising money for SD Pride!
• We designed our Pride Dried Flower Wrap to mirror the colors of the Progress Flag, which emphasizes inclusion of transgender people and people of color.
As we celebrate Pride month, we stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ teammates, community partners, customers, and allies who are working to build a more inclusive, equitable future. Happy Pride!
