Flowers for Halloween Parties

If you’re planning an over the top Halloween bash, this gorgeous party will inspire you! Creating richly-layered, moody florals for this event with planner-extraordinaire Amorology was so fun! The color inspiration was black and blush, so we leaned into using gothic, feathery greenery: agonis. The black, almost feather-like leaves of the agonis contrasted beautifully with spooky spider mums and spotted lilies, dressing up the pendant lighting and dripping out of vases alongside dark privet berries. This stunning set-up was technically a sweet sixteen birthday party, but we could easily use this event as inspo for Halloween flowers!
Fun fact: there are very few flowers that are truly black, but many are considered black for use in the floral industry. Most of these are actually a very, very, VERY deep purple, but blooms such as calla lilies, scabiosa, and chocolate cosmos register as black in floral arrangements and fit the bill when it comes to Halloween flowers. To bring out the darkness of these florals, consider pairing with lighter blooms to create contrast – the brighter flowers make those rich plummy-tones appear closer to black. If “black flowers” are tricky to source when setting your own table, consider using black vases and candlestick holders to bring the season’s signature color through.

As we get ready to celebrate Halloween, we’re feeling nostalgic for the florals we created for a spooky styled shoot in 2019, which got us featured on Martha Stewart’s social media! This gorgeous collaboration came together with the help of our fave display artist Ashley Renuart, who helped us create the painted black fennel florals hanging above the tablescape.
We used seasonal blooms in our favorite fall shades for the centerpiece, including amaranth, spider mums, and gnarled branches that evoke witches’ fingers! We knew the event space would be dark and moody, with black walls and candlelight, so we relied on the glow of terracotta and golden-hued flowers to lighten up the table.

If you’re looking for a bit of Hocus Pocus, a witchy floral fête will leave your guests spellbound. We created this festive styled shoot for our coven of creative pals, and the results were featured on Green Wedding Shoes! Halloween flowers can be used throughout a party, not just for a centerpiece! We created a mesmerizing floral mandala using petals and bloom heads, crafted a floral cocktail (with the bewitching addition of dry ice to up those foggy Halloween vibes), and gathered materials for each guest to make their own flower crown.
This witchy gathering would be a snap to recreate with friends! Scoop supplies from our shops, or hire Native Poppy’s florists to set up a private flower crown workshop!

Ready to BOO-gie the night away? Michelle and Brent’s full service wedding florals could easily inspire an over-the-top Halloween disco dance party! Our fearless leader Natalie Gill installed gorgeous hanging floral pieces above the ceremony altar and the reception dance floor, using moody foliage like smokebush, beech branches, and agonis alongside brighter florals like blush hydrangea to emphasize their darker tones. Just imagine floral installations like these at a show stopping costume ball!
Flowers to Celebrate the Season

Even if you’re not planning a Halloween bash, there are tons of opportunities to bring florals in to celebrate the season. If spooky doesn’t speak to you, consider another classic for Halloween flowers: marigolds! A monochromatic table set in shades of orange is a deceivingly simple way to create a gorgeous holiday floral design. Marigolds are in season throughout October, and are the perfect flower to set the mood for Halloween. Also known by the Aztec name Cempasúchil, marigolds are the official floral symbol of Día de los Muertos. Although Halloween and Día de los Muertos vary greatly in their cultural roots, there is crossover in decoration – the vibrant marigold is a fit for both celebrations. Complete the look with golden taper candle holders and taper candles in fall colors to complete the look.
Día de los Muertos is a time to remember departed loved ones, and honor their memories. Families create altars called Ofrendas to honor family members who have passed away, displaying their portraits, alongside their favorite foods and drinks – as well as gorgeous floral arrangements and garlands that add gorgeous color to the altar.

The offerings are more than just decorative! Marigolds hold meaningful symbolism in the celebration of Día de los Muertos, as the Aztecs believed that the scent of the flowers helped ancestors find their way back from the spirit realm in order to visit their kin. The altars are meant to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell the scent of the marigolds, and return to celebrate with their families. Our floral team is so inspired by this floral tradition, creating marigold arrangements for an altar is an honor.

If you’re hoping for more of a dark and moody statement arrangement for your entryway for the week of Halloween, we’ve got ideas! Get inspired by this moody compote arrangement we designed in collaboration with our go-to flower wholesaler, Cali Wholesale! Every year they curate a special edition “Boo Box” of dark-toned blooms to inspire florists to celebrate the season. We took this inspiration and ran with it, using the deeply saturated purple roses, hydrangea, smokebush, hellebore, scabiosa to create a crescent shaped arrangement in a black compote vase. Our tall urn flower arrangement in a dark and moody color palette could be just the thing to decorate your kitchen or entryway for Halloween.
