Renovation Update: Native Poppy South Park

Native Poppy South Park crash

We miss you, South Park!

Wow – it’s hard to believe it, but it has been four months since a car crash led to the temporary closure of Native Poppy South Park. We’re so grateful to all our friends and neighbors who have reached out to offer support during this difficult time – our community means the world to us. We want to share an update on how things have been going since June, and details about our re-opening plans!

For those of you who have not yet visited us in Mission Valley, our warehouse on Mission Gorge Road is now open for shopping and local pick-up! Opening up our warehouse space to the public has been a beautiful experience, allowing our team to continue flowering for our central San Diego community. While we miss our South Park store dearly, we’ve decked out our Mission Valley warehouse with a fun floral mural, and special touches that make it a memorable place to visit.

As for updates on our South Park store renovation and re-opening, there’s unfortunately not much progress made… yet!

Native Poppy South Park store damage

After the dust cleared from the car crash, and the city’s inspector examined the damage to the building, we received word that our building required special permits to be processed before we could begin re-construction. These permits were required both because of the extent of the structural damage – this project is wayyyy beyond just patching up a wall – and because of the history and age of the building.

When the store first closed, we talked about different ways to communicate our re-opening plan. We initially added a note on our website: “Re-opening Fall 2022”... but that turned out to be more optimistic than we’d hoped. As the permit process drags on, that goal feels more and more challenging to reach. But we are determined to rebuild Native Poppy South Park! Our team of talented florists are still here, making plans, brainstorming, and patiently waiting to create a new in-store experience that will delight you in the coming months.

We’re hoping to re-open Native Poppy South Park in time for the holiday season.

While we’ve waited for the city to process our permits, we’ve been dreaming and scheming about the new displays and art installations we’ll create for our South Park renovation. If you’ve visited the shop before, you know it’s a place to come for flowers and inspiration. Our larger than life art installs (designed and built by local artist Ashley Renuart) make this little shop extra magical, and we’re excited to plan an eye-catching new display for our re-opening.

Native Poppy in Solana Beach and Mission Valley

In the meantime, our florists are flowering away! Wedding season has been a lovely time for us to connect with couples and create beautiful memories. Our Solana Beach store is open, and looking as gorgeous as ever, with our silk flower installation welcoming folks in on Cedros Ave from Tuesday through Sunday. And our delivery drivers are shuttling flower deliveries all over San Diego in our cute peach vans – have you seen them out on the road during your commute?

If you need flowers or gifts, Native Poppy is here for you! Here’s a few ways you can get your blooms, and support Native Poppy while we work towards re–opening our flower shop in South Park:

Thanks for your continued support! We look forward to welcoming you back to Native Poppy South Park soon.
